Has an old tune you heard ever triggered a long forgotten memory? I believe that we could all answer "Yes!" to that question. After the brain surgery that I underwent as a child, if one had not known my age, they would have thought that I had dementia. One portion of my brain that was taken out was the left hippocampus-- the exact spot that dementia originates! Without assistance, I could not find my way through the small high school which I attended. People were annoyed that I told the same story, repeatedly. For years, I lived with shame, very self-conscious of myself. However, on Sunday mornings, I could recall every word to the hymns sung and the songs played on the radio. "But, how?" people asked.
After becoming a Certified Dementia Practitioner in 2011, I deeply studied neurology and music. While every part of the brain has a specific role, music is the only thing besides exercise that involves the entire brain. Having worked with numerous residents who have dementia in varying facilities, I was astounded at the number of individuals who could not recall the names of close relatives but could sing songs and many who could still play musical instruments. If you would like more information, please reach out to me. Thank you, and may God bless you!
